Принцип действия прибора основан на отражении механического колебания от раздела сред с разными физическими свойствами. При ударном воздействии в свае возникают собственные колебания частота которых зависит от геометрических размеров сваи и глубины залегания дефектов. В приборе предусмотрен режим спектральной обработки сигнала, при помощи которого можно проводить диагностику сваи по спектру колебаний.
Прибор состоит из электронного блока, размещенного в ударопрочном корпусе фирмы PELI, из одного или двух (в зависимости от комплектации) сейсмоприемников, молотка с демпфером. По спецзаказу поставляются: молоток со встроенным пьезодатчиком для контроля силы удара; приспособления для установки датчиков на грунт; темпер для возбуждения упругих волн в грунте.
Прибор ПДС-МГ4 используется так же при сейсморазведке и спектральной сейсморазведке, используемой при обследовании выделенного под строительство инженерного сооружения участка. Прибор применяется при обследовании фундаментных плит на наличие пустот или разуплотнений грунта под подошвой плиты. Прибор можно использовать при обследовании ленточных фундаментов и насыпей.
